The Detox: Spring Cleaning for Your Body! Print

Detoxifying your body cleans out the build-up of toxins from too much rich, processed food and alcohol, alleviating the after-effects of the holiday season as well as winter weight gain. If you live in the northern hemisphere, you're into the last stretch of winter, and it may be a good time to give yourself a spring clean to get ready for, well … spring!

Unfortunately, many things you eat, drink or breathe contain chemicals and toxins. Your liver and kidneys are designed to rid the body of toxins found in the food and drinks we consume, as well as the air we breathe. Modern living has increased the level of these toxins to the extent that our bodies' natural processes are unable to cope. Small amounts of toxins left in the body build up over time can causing health problems and weight gain. The holiday season, with its family get-togethers, office events and year end parties, increases the level of toxins with unhealthy, rich food, often accompanied by an increase in alcohol intake. Add to that the problem of stodgy, yet warming, winter fare, and it's not surprising that many of us will have picked up weight. Poor digestion, bloating, feelings of lethargy and fatigue, unexplained headaches and irritability may be the result of the past few weeks over-indulgence.

DetoxA detox program is designed to flush the toxins contributing to these problems, by limiting your food intake to specific foods or drinks that will help to rid the body of the build-up, usually by increasing the frequency of urination and bowel movements. Many of the toxins that are not eliminated naturally from your body are stored in fat cells. By drawing the toxins out, those fat cells are broken down and eliminated too.

Many health consious people will undergo a detox once or twice a year, reporting that they feel more energetic, have more vitality and a more efficient system after the detox. All of these effects contribute to weight loss and the ability to maintain your weight. In fact, your body will reject unhealthy habits on its own once you have cleaned out your system, and will let you know when you're overdoing the 'bad' foods, leading to naturally healthier eating habits.

A detox program is not always easy to get through, and because it can be quite a radical process, it is recommended that you check with your doctor before starting a detox. Some detox programs are more arduous than others, so look for one with a step-by-step guideline to get you through from start to finish.

Spring CleaningThink of a detox as spring cleaning for your body. Throw out all the junk you've gathered that you don't need, clean out the nooks and crannies and get rid of the cobwebs. With the added advantage of weight loss, a detox program may be just what you need to get ready for this new year!
